The Garvaghy parade has been disallowed since 1998 because of the actions of its participants
Three young brothers were murdered in a loyalist arson attack in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland. The boys – Richard Quinn, 11, Mark Quinn, 9, and Jason Quinn, 7 – were asleep in their beds when a petrol bomb was thrown through a window at the rear of their terraced house at about 0430 BST.
Chief Constable of the RUC Ronnie Flanagan said: “What happened last night wasn’t protest. We believe we’re investigating the sectarian murder of three children.”
The attack came after a week of protests by Orangemen demanding access to the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road as part of their annual march at Drumcree church.
24/06/2014 The Parades Commission gave the go ahead for the Orange Order to march along the lower section of Garvaghy Road in Portadown for the first time in almost two decades. During the parade, a new arch will be dedicated to a local Orangeman who died recently.
24/6/2014: The Parades Commission is reviewing its decision on a contentious loyalist parade in Portadown, County Armagh.
The Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition objected to the route
Breandán Mac Cionnaith said the march was being seen as a “provocative action“.
“This is a parade that our community feels there is no call for,”
SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly: “It is a new parade. “Residents are very worried about this march – they thought the issue of Drumcree had been settled.”
25/6/2014 : The Parades Commission reversed its decision to let Orangemen march along what it called the “lower stretch of the Garvaghy Road“.
26/6/2014: DUP MP David Simpson has said that the Parades Commission is set to review its U-turn over a parade in the Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, scheduled to take pace this Saturday.
“They don’t have much time to make the decision,
but they get paid well for it.”
26/6/2014: The Parades Commission decision to restrict a parade in the Garvaghy Road area of Portadown, scheduled to take place this Saturday, will remain in place.
26/6/2014: The Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) has likened the application by the Orange Order to coat trail 300 orange men, supporters and bands through the entirely nationalist Strabane town centre to “the Klu Klux Klan marching through Harlem”.
“The days when Strabane was held to ransom by the Orange State and Orange Order are long gone and these people need to get that into their heads.”.
Michael McLaughlin, IRSP, “We cannot understand why the Orange Order wants to go out of their way to create a new contentious parade in Strabane.
“If the Parades Commission determination allows this march to continue unregulated we will stop it. Republicans in Strabane have allowed the Orange Order to continue to have parades along the predominately nationalist Patrick Street for over a decade. If the Orange Order continue to try and raise sectarian tensions this agreement may have to be revised”.
N.B. The Parades Commission designate the parade entitled Strabane District LOL No 14 on 12/7/2014 as “sensitive“.
It is still under consideration.
27/6/2014:Portadown Orange Order District Master Darryl Hewitt called on the Secretary of State to sack all the members of the Parades Commission.
Mr Hewitt said Portadown District Orangemen supported the parade organisers “100%”.
“Whatever Parkmount Arch Committee decide regarding their next move they have the full backing of my district,”
27/6/2014: A joint delegation of the DUP, UUP, PUP, TUV, UPRG (West Belfast) and Belfast County Grand Orange Lodge met with our lovely
Secretary of State over the exacerbating situation around parades. The parties made it clear that they will act collectively on the parading issue in the days and weeks ahead.
